I look at this HerbstReise of ours as a sequence short but complete gaze of sound, often evocative in a narrative way, aimed at fulfilling an articulate as well as legible pattern.
Though a single breath crosses them, fascinating opportunities are not alien to the syntax, the outline, and the expression of these improvisations. A clear ellipsis the dialogue proceeds delicately and consistently into, even when it thickens.
The inner timing, the layer of colour that shines through have a reflective, possibly contemplative nature. A density resting on the lightest structure, and developing its discourse in a conversation, in a kind of natural, when not intimate, sudden inspiration.
Listening to the tracks once more, browsing through them like through writing, I realise that an innate formal pattern informs these pieces, a sort of spontaneous expositive hierarchy with vivid details and extensive lyrical moments.
An itinerary suggested by reciprocal signs, unveiling and slight mysteries, tones and timbre pigments guiding our listening through extended lines and sudden contrasts to the completeness that remains elusive, yet colouring the whole path.
It is the outcome of cohesion, concentration, and articulation on an expressive axis directed beyond codes and appearances.
Recognisable sources linked to the background that inspirits this sensitivity peer out from a few colours and certain facets, but, for sure, this music seems unconcerned by them.
I have the feeling that HerbstReise has been waiting to come to be for a long time.
Meeting Nicola musically again, and making our reciprocal sparks twinkle together have been a real gift for me. The intuitive quality, the freshness, and a sort of explanatory crispness of his pianism are, for the most part, the reason for the quality of this album.
The musical language we speak has small and significant ripples like light broken by darkness on the surface of a body of water. This is the fascination I have suggested, a time you can’t but belong to.
